Combat performance clinic

Combat performance clinic is an open event designed for combat sports athletes and enthusiasts, offering the opportunity to benefit from our top-tier testing equipment and expertise. We've gathered comprehensive reference values from Finnish combat athletes, allowing you to compare your results against established benchmarks

Performance test selection

Punching power

The PowerKube is used to measure punching- and kicking power. It’s a cube-shaped unit equipped with embedded accelerometers.

CMJ, RSI and broad jump

We use Musclelab force plates or laser grids for measuring countermovement jump (CMJ) and reactive strength index (RSI), and tape measure for broad jump. CMJ gives insight on the explosive power of the legs, while RSI tests elasticity, stiffness and quickness. RSI is tested by 7 seconds of continous pogo jumps and the the average of the 5 best jumps (jump height/ground contact time) is the result. This is basically the same as the 10-5 test.

Jump push-up RSI and landmine throw

Jump push-up RSI is performed in the same way as the RSI test for the legs, but for the upper body it's more of a power production test. The landmine throw, assessed using the Gymaware, evaluates not just upper body power but also the coordinated force generated from the legs through the entire body. The Gymaware, which is a linear position transducer, can be use to measure the speed of the barbell in other movements too, e.g. bench press.

Maximum Strength tests

In our study we used a force plate to measure the isometric mid-thigh pull and we will continue exploring different ways to optimize testing maximal strength for combat athletes. We also used the classical 1RM bench press test.

Reference values

Our reference values are derived from our own studies (2024) and ongoing daily testing with full-contact combat athletes. In our initial study, we tested 105 athletes (74 males and 31 females) from boxing, kickboxing, Muay Thai, and mixed martial arts

Punching power

Punching power data were gathered with the PowerKube. For the jab and the cross the subjects were encouraged to push from the rear leg (but not step) and step with the front leg. The hook was tested with the dominant hand.

Physical performance tests

We have tested the athletic performance of combat athletes with RSI (5/10 method), CMJ, broad jump, jump push-up RSI (same method as for pogo jump RSI, but we recognize that this is more of upper body power production), Landmine throw (dominant arm, 15kg barbell for females and 20kg for males), IMTP and bench press.
